EIA Resource and Response Centre

eRc is a Resource and Response Centre that keeps a watch on the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) processes and ensures that the impact of developmental activities on India's Environment and Communities is properly accessed and accounted for. The Environment Impact Assessment Resources & Response Centre was established in the year 2007, in response to the felt need to keep a watch, as well as to challenge, Environment Impact Assessment-EIA reports which are based on inadequate and improper assessment of the impacts of proposed developmental activities on natural India including, wild flora and fauna, rivers, wetlands etc.

  • Keeping a close watch and challenge the EIA reports those are based on inadequate and improper assessment of developmental activities on the environment and communities.
  • Acting as an independent resource and response centre to the issues of urgent environmental concerns, especially for communities and groups impacted by faulty EIA and approvals.
  • Creating a national level database on EIA reports, those are accessible to groups and individuals.
  • Conducting the alternative Environmental Impact Assessment studies in sensitive cases and challenging the faulty EIA.
  • Creating a panel of experts to critique EIA reports in terms of accepted socio-economic and environmental standards, and facilitating a countrywide network of groups and agencies in environmental development.
  • Creating awareness among communities and NGOs about the EIA processes and participating at public hearings.
  • Providing third party assistance to Government Agencies, like Expert Appraisal Committee (in Environmental Clearance issues) and Forest Advisory Committee (in Forest Clearance issues).

The Focus:

Though the centre has been working across country, but the primary focus is Ecologically sensitive areas such as the Himalayas, the Western and Eastern Ghats and the North Eastern part of the India and areas, which are homes to vulnerable forest dependent communities.

What We Do

The center acts as an expert third party advocacy and action group, which is in a position to scientifically critique and challenge the approved faulty EIA reports of the environmentally sensitive projects. These projects range from mining, hydro and thermal power to roads, highways and ports among others.

Research & Advocacy

Orientations and Trainings

Environmental laws and complexities of environmental issues demand conduction of orientations and Trainings for NGOs, CSOs, Activists, Community, lawyers and other interested persons for their better participation in environmental decision making, interpreting information and if need be to protest and litigate. eRc has environmental law experts of great pioneering experience in dealing with environment issues and litigation. They are highly skilled in communication and are unique trainers in the country. Orientations and Trainings has been a regular part of eRc activities since its inception.

Interactions with Communities & CSOs

Maximum environmental damage is happening in the backyard of the country e.g. Chhatisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha etc in rural and forest areas, away from scrutiny of the people who know and understand some of the issues. Local communities and local Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) are the one who need to be supported with information, knowledge and guidance to understand the complexities of the environmental issues, environmental laws and encouraged to protect their livelihood, life and environment, and, in the process, if need be, protest and litigate. eRc executives travel across the country to meet people and organisations and guide and support them to the extent possible.
